Samsung’s 6.5W LED Lamp Wins Good Design Award

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that it has won the prestigious 2012 Good Design award for its 6.5W LED A19 lamp.

“We are honored to have won a Good Design Award, which recognizes our move towards more aesthetic and functional LED lamp designs. We will continue to enhance the design competitiveness of our LED lighting products with creativity and innovation as we expand our market presence.” said Hee Chong Yoon, Vice President of LED marketing, Device Solutions, Samsung Electronics.

The award-winning Samsung LED A19 lamp is designed to easily replace 40W equivalent traditional incandescent, halogen, and CFL bulbs in a wide range of home and office environments. The 6.5W LED lamp has the general shape of traditional lamps but at the same time adds aflair of distinctiveness inspired by elegant traditional Korean white porcelain of the Joseon (Chosun) dynasty. In addition, the fading concave patterns on its heat sink are not only functional, but also add to the lamp’s overall look by creating a light and airy feel.

In addition to its visual appeal, the Samsung LED A19 lamp features an environmentally friendly design. It provides approximately 80% energy savings compared to traditional incandescent lamps, without compromising light performance or the quality of light, and offers a much longer lifespan – approximately 15,000 hours.

For the heat sink, the Samsung LED A19 lamp uses PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) resin instead of aluminum. This reduces the weight of the product and provides a more eco-friendly overall design by eliminating the need to carve and paint an aluminum casing, which would have resulted in unnecessary waste. The use of PBT also contributes to lowering the overall cost.

The renowned Good Design Award is bestowed by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP), which has awarded products with brilliant designs for more than 50 years. Those products selected for the award are conferred the institute’s “G Mark” logo of distinction.
