Next Generation Luminaires Outdoor Design Competition Opens for LED Street Lights

The 2013 Next Generation Luminaires (NGL) Outdoor Design Competition was opened on July 8, 2013. The NGL Competition partners include the Illuminating Engineering Society, the International Association of Lighting Designers, and the US Department of Energy represented by Pacific Northwest National Laboratories. The entries of this competition can be street and roadway lighting which includes traditional cobrahead LED street lights and decorative post top LED street lights.

All entries must register products through the LED Lighting Facts program.

According to the Entrant’s Guide, technical requirements include a minimum CRI of 70, power factor≥90. Entries with a CCT of 4200K or below are highly recommended for judging consistency.

Judges will evaluate the LED fixtures according to the following standards: color quality, appropriate illuminance, light distribution, BUG ratings, luminance and glare control, serviceability and replacement, energy efficiency, power quality, lumen maintenance, controlability, value, and aesthetic appearance and style.

The category for street and roadway lighting includes pole-mounted roadway luminaires on major roadways, pole-mounted street lighting luminaires on collector roads, pole-mounted street lighting luminaires on local residential roads, and pole-mounted decorative street lighting luminaires on streetscape.

The intent to submit form is due on September 20, 2013. The final due date for online submission is October 11, 2013. The physical product is due on November 1, 2013. Winners will be announced in January 2014. Winners will be announced on February 25, 2014 at Strategies in Light in Santa Clara, California.
