Epistar Files Lawsuit Against Epileds for Infringing Three IR LED Patents

Taiwan’s largest LED die manufacturer Epistar has filed a patent infringement complaint against Epileds in Taiwan’s courts for selling infringing products to downstream suppliers, the company announced in a recent press release.

The complaint filed on Jan. 8, 2016 in Taiwanese Intellectual Property Court, alleges Epileds’ LED products include “BN-D4242J-A3”, “BN-D4242E-A3”and other IR LED products violate Epistar’s IR LED patents No. 141155, 170789, 202662 and I283031.

Epistar, a veteran and specialist in the innovation of photonic semiconductor technology, including ultra-high brightness AlGaInP LED chips, has comprehensively deployed patents in the infrared LED (IR LED) sector for years.

The Taiwanese leading LED manufacturer tends to a remain low- profile when reacting to patent infringement issues, but decided to draw attention to Epileds patent infringement issues after being affected by competitors copying their products for years. Epistar stressed that intellectual property is the basis of industry development and the root of business competitiveness. The company beseeched the industry to respect intellectual property laws.

The defendant Epileds specializes in the production of high-power LEDs such as high-power InGaN LED, AlGaInP LEDs, and in recent years has turned its attention to non-visible LEDs markets, including UV LEDs, IR LED EPI-wafers and chips .The company is relatively more profitable than other Taiwanese compatriots. Epileds has not commented on Epistars patent infringement lawsuit.

Meanwhile, Epistar will inspect whether other manufacturers have infringed its patents and intellectual property rights.
