Indian State to Become 100% LED-lit by Distributing 1.5M LED Bulbs at US $0.38 and 166K Streetlight Upgrade

Goa, a state located in the South western region of India is to become the first state 100% lit with LEDs. The authority, the Electricity Department, has rolled out the distribution project of 1.5 million LED bulbs to approximately 489, 000 local consumers. Meanwhile, LED streetlight replacement project hosted by EESL will switch 166,000 conventional streetlights to LEDs, reported Herald.

The authority signed an agreement on April 28 with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) to initiate the Union Ministry’s project, offering affordable LED bulbs to its consumers in a bid to improve the extent of their energy saving.

Power Minister Milind Naik rolled out the implementation of DELP project, providing each household opportunities to purchase up to three 9W LED bulbs at only INR 25 (US$ 0.38) in the following two months. The discount price is about less than 1/10 of the regular INR 450 retail price.

The state will become the first to use only LEDs as the EESL is to distribute 1.5 million LED bulbs to consumers. All the distributed LED bulbs are made in India, said secretary IAS Kunal.

The application of LED bulb will facilitate saving up to 78.6 million unit of power each year. At the same time, consumers will be able to cut their energy bill at INR 1,100 for every 1,000 electricity units.
