Amber LED Coastal Lights Improve Survivability of Sea Turtle Hatchings

Lighting Science Group Corporation released its outdoor LED coastal Lights designed with amber-colored light, to improve survivability of sea turtle hatchlings and other wildlife that are sensitive to light or threatened by artificial coastal light. Studies show that turtle eye receptors are easily distracted by wavelengths in the ultraviolet, blue, or green spectrum found in typical white lighting. This bright, disruptive beach illumination can attract wildlife and disturb its natural behavior, so it should be replaced by amber-colored LED illumination.

"Sea turtles and other wildlife are in danger under the traditional white lighting in coastal regions," said Jeremy Cage, CEO of Lighting Science. "The amber LED coastal light from our Nature Collection offers flexibility in design and installation but it doesn't disrupt the natural behavior of turtles and other wildlife."

Properties placed in coastal areas are often required to comply with light pollution standards for the protection of wildlife, especially sea turtle hatchlings. Each year, nearly 20,000 hatchlings are misled by coastal lighting and most of them did not safely enter into the ocean.

The LED coastal light is available in a variety of lamp holders, so it is simple to transfer traditional lamps into LED lamps. These luminaires offer optional full cutoff shielding attachable in the field without tools. The coastal light meets Florida Wildlife Conservation standards and International Dark Sky Association requirements. Proven installations along the Florida coast have shown that the coastal light solution is playing a protective role.
