Samsung Files OLED TV Trademarks in South Korea

News Source:

Samsung Electronic has applied for exclusive rights to name its OLED TVs, in an attempt to take a pre-emptive strike against LG Chem, according to a Yonhap News Agency report.

The company has submitted a trademark application for five OLED TV brand names—Super UHD OLED, Ultra Super OLED, Samsung Super Ultra OLED, Ultra OLED and Super UHD in Seoul on Jan. 26, according to the Korean Intellectual Property Office.

Two days earlier, LG debuted its 2015 TV lineup in Korea, which the company has named Super Ultra HD TV.

LG has also filed for the registration for Smart OLED and Super Ultra HD TV in mid- January, and has also filed a separate trademark application for “OLED.”

Market insiders noted the two companies were speeding up the process of securing exclusive rights to their high-end TV brands.

Despite OLED’s high production costs, LG’ has been using OLED TVs as its flagship line for the premium market, due to the company’s better OLED yield rates.

Samsung on the other hand, has been less enthusiastic and has decided to promote quantum dot display, which has been coined SUHD TV.
