Southern Indian State to Lit with LED Streetlights

Hyderabad, the capital of the southern Indian state of Telangana, is to become the first to have LED street lighting in the city, reported Deccan Chronicle.

The conversion covers the Western corridor of jubilee Hills, Banhara Hills and Yousufguda. Currently the electricity bill costs the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) INR 18.07 (US $2.67 million). The upgrade to LED lighting will slash the bill to only INR 78 million (US $1.15 million). In 2015, the municipal government installed approximately 750 LED streetlights in areas of Madhapur and Chandrayangutta for a pilot run.

Compared to existing sodium vapor streetlights, LED ones are expected to save up to 60% of energy. Meanwhile, these novel lighting technology require relatively less maintenance than conventional ones.

The installation will be done by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). The total conversion cost will be around INR 177 million (US $2.6 million).

A monitoring system will also be installed to control the LED streetlights. Meanwhile, all maintenance relates to LED streetlight will be handled by EESL.
