Korean Researchers Found Exposure to IR LED light Could Ease Surgical Scar

Researchers from the School of Medicine, Ajou University found that regular exposure to IR LED light reduces scars and improves the healing condition, compared to a controlled group, reported Healio.

Researchers provide 14 sessions of low level LED light treatment at 830nm/ 590nm over four weeks at a dose of 60 J/cm2. The result shown improved scar quality after thyroidectomy to a certain degree. Free from pain and other side effects, low level of LED therapy (called LED- LLLT) can be used on Asian skin.

Young Joon Park, MD of dermatology and Surgery at School of Medicine, Ajou University suggested that more detailed research should be done in assessing the efficacy of 830/590nm LED light treatment.

Park and colleagues assessed 35 patients with thyroidectomy suture lines who were exposed to the LED light treatment for 11 minutes a day for one week and followed by treatment three times a week for up to 3 weeks. Patients were given follow-up check at one months and three months from the treatment which researchers used a tri-stimulus-color analyzer and the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) score, and a subjective satisfaction score to evaluate scar quality.

“The overall results suggest that 830/590 nm LED-LLLT employed in the study could be an effective method for improved scar quality after a surgical procedures,” concluded researchers.
