Taiwan LED Supply Chain Backs Apple’s Mini LED and Micro LED Developments

Recently it is reported that Apple is planning to invest around US$ 334 million for its new facility in Taiwan to push development in Micro LED and Mini LED display technology with its local partners Epistar and AUO. Many believe that the iPhone maker will intensify its display technologies including Mini LED and Micro LED with the mature LED supply chain in Taiwan covering wafer manufacture, chip production, chip testing and display fabrication.

LEDinside covered in November 2019 that Apple has almost finished the construction of the new facility in Taoyuan, Taiwan, which locates nearby AUO and TSMC, Apple’s reported Micro LED partners.

In 2017, Apple was said to begin pilot production of Micro LED based Apple Watch at the plant in Taiwan and collaborate with TSMC to develop alternative approaches for Micro LED production. In 2018, Apple was again said to secretly meet AUO and Epistar for the possibility to work on Micro LED display.

Until now, Apple seems to form a solid Micro LED and Mini LED supply chain in Taiwan from foundry service provider TSMC, chip maker Epistar, panel manufacturer AUO and testing equipment suppliers FitTech. Taiwan-based industry players also cover other supporting technologies including driver IC, bonding process and backplane.
