Lucis Launches Wireless Color Changing LED Light Freed From Apps and Needless Buttons

Most of the smart color tunable LED bulbs on the market at the moment require smartphone apps to control the light, but a duo from Amsterdam plans release a simple interactive cube free from buttons, Bluetooth and WiFi connections.

Lardy Van der Pal and Simon Koop who founded Lucis, aims to bring the color tunable LED light to the masses through their recent Indiegogo crowdfunding project.

The cube light is available in wood, aluminum and ABC base finishes, and similar to most color tuning LED tubes offers a wide range of 16 million colors.

Without buttons or smartphone apps for control, the cube light completely relies on touch sensors to change colors, and dimming too. Different sides of the cube control dimming and color tuning. Interesting, shaking Lucis can also turn the light on or switch the colors.

Lucis is completely operated by touch sensors embedded in the LED cube light.

Not many details were offered about whether the light can be precisely controlled to emit a desired color, the color tuning process will probably be fairly random. I am guessing users of the light would probably have to violently shake the light repeatedly, hopefully not 15.99 million times until it lands on the wanted color.

Nonetheless, the design concept remains interesting and offers a potential solution for future smart lighting products.

One positive feature is the lights fairly long battery life, and can last a week after being charged for four hours.

Van der Pal and Koop have partnered with a Chinese manufacturer based in Shenzhen to bring the interesting cube light to the public, the LED luminaire will meet AQL 2.5/4.0 standards and will be RoHS, CE, and FCC certified.

Compared to most smart lighting products out there the current price tag seems fairly affordable, early backers of Lucis Indiegogo project can receive a basic Lucis model for US$ 39 by April 2016. Lucis Indiegogo project has raised US $15,979 out of its tartegted US $15,000 in less than one week.
