Samsung Electronics Awarded Flexible Display OLED Patent

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted Samsung Electronics a patent for flexible and bendable TV and tablet PC displays, reported Business Korea recently.

The patent was filed last year with USPTO, and has come under the industry lime light because it covers both OLED and LCD displays.

According to a USPTO statement on July 9, Samsung was granted the flexible LCD and OLED display (Patent US 9078362) on July 7, 2015. Samsung first filed the patent on May 1, 2014.

The patent describes the process of making flexible display panels on circuit boards, and is projected to be essential in the development of Samsung’s foldable smartphones to be released in 2016.

Documents submitted by Samsung to USPTO note it is possible to use the patent in 8” and above TVs and tablet PCs. There is also a potential for incorporating the technology to making foldable LCD displays.
