LG Launches Its First Commercialized LED Cinema Display in Taiwan

LG Electronics said on June 11 that its LED Cinema Display has been installed in Taiwan’s movie theater. It is the first commercialized LED Cinema Display of LG and the first LED theater display in Taiwan.

The display is 14 meters wide and seven meters high, supporting 4K resolution and installed in a 300-seat theater that is operated by Taiwan’s local cinema chain Showtime Cinema.

LG also works with audio tech company Dolby Laboratories to add surround sound to the display, offering an advanced experience with its LED Cinema Display.

LG joined the market of LED cinema screen early this year when it registered the trademark of LG LED Cinema by the end of March. The company’s original plan is to release the cinema LED products at CinemaCon 2020 but the event has been cancelled due to COVID-19. Taiwan thus become the first country apart from Korea where LG debuted its new cinema display.

LED display for movie theaters has been a niche market that many industry players are fighting to gain more share. Samsung, the rival of LG, introduced its cinema LED product “Onyx” in 2018 and the products have been installed in several countries worldwide. Other companies including SONY, Leyard and Unilumin also trying to promote related applications.

LEDinside of TrendForce noted that LED shipment for video wall is expected to undergo further growth in 2020. Although the current yearly revenue forecast has been revised from the pre-pandemic figure of US$2.261 billion down to US$1.946 billion, it still represents a 3.7% YoY growth.
