Philips Color Kinetics Launches Its Lighting Designer in Residence Program

Earlier this year, the Philips Color Kinetics Research and Development team launched its Lighting Designer in Residence program. The goal of the residency is to provide a framework for collaborating with a young professional on longer-term, strategic questions relevant to the future of architectural lighting. In the context of a rapidly changing lighting industry, a continuous dialogue between design practitioners and engineering experts is increasingly important.

“Anything we do in development is intended to serve people working on real projects – that is our main goal,” said Susanne Seitinger, creator of the Lighting Designer in Residence program. “However, there’s not always a shared language among engineers from different backgrounds and practitioners like lighting designers or architects, even if they’re talking about the same thing. This kind of collaboration is an excellent way to establish a common language.”

Each year, one young professional is invited to participate in the program. Selection criteria include a 4-year degree in architectural lighting design, interior design, architecture, theater, or equivalent experience as well as 2-5 years of work experience. Through first-hand interactions with interdisciplinary teams, the professional gains an understanding of the complexity of digital lighting solutions to better assess and specify products in his or her professional practice.

The designer works directly with Research and Development at Philips Color Kinetics headquarters in Burlington, Massachusetts. As a result, engineers can have an informal dialogue with a practitioner on a daily basis. This type of feedback provides crucial application knowledge during the development process and a broader perspective on industry trends.

Her four and a half years at Berlin-based studio dinnebier+blieske peaked her interest in the strategic and technological challenges that manufacturers face with the advent of LED lighting technology. “After specifiying luminaires from about 50 key manufacturers in my practice, I have seen many different approaches to fixture design and market positioning. It’s interesting to now have an inside view on product development,” said Dannemann. “It’s also exciting to meet people from different backgrounds: not only designers and planners, but product managers, engineers, and other experts.”

The current residency runs through next summer and will inform how the program evolves. Looking ahead, Dannemann wants to reflect on this experience again in a few months: “I’m sure that both the professional experiences and cultural differences I encounter will have a lasting impact on my future practice.”
