Underwriters Laboratories Partners With Luminaire Testing Laboratory To Provide Energy Star Testing Of LED

Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), a global leader in product safety testing and certification services, announced Wednesday to become a strategic partner of Luminaire Testing Laboratory, Inc. (LTL) . And it has also become the first Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory to provide Energy Star testing of LED products.

As LEDs become more generally recognized by the market, this partnership will be of important significance for both UL and the lighting industry, said Alberto Uggetti, UL's global lighting industry general manager. The need to verify the energy efficiencies of new technologies are increasing from global customers.

UL has been testing product safety and developing product standards as its core business for the past 115 years, and it is now moving into the environmental space. Earlier this year, a new company, UL Environment has been launched to verify claims on environmental products such as LED lights, as well as test and certify environmental products for compliance with sustainability standards.

And this time, through the partnership with LTL, UL will be able to participate in the LED Energy Star program sponsored by Department of Energy of which LTL has been an integral part. It will also provide its customers with an expanded service portfolio by providing testing of the energy efficiency of LED lighting products. The sharing from LTL of its 20 years of experience and knowledge will be important for the team to enter into the new field.

"With the strength of the UL brand and LTL's testing capabilities, we can build a strong platform of lighting performance services for luminaires and light sources, including LED, incandescent, fluorescent and HID technologies." stated Mike Grather, LTL president.

Under this partnership, UL's service portfolio will expand in the near future to cover all energy efficiency requirements in North America, including DOE and EPA Energy Star services for the United States, NRCan and Energy Star services for Canada, future NEMA premium programs in the United States, and CEC California Title 20 and Title 24.
