Epistar to Spin off Business Unit for VCSEL and GaN-on-Si Manufacturing

LED chip maker Epistar reported the company’s decision to establish a spin-off to focus on VCSEL (vertical cavity surface emitting laser) and GaN on Si components production. This spin-off will be named Epistar Semiconductor. M.J. Chou, the current president of Epistar, will become the president of the new subsidiary.

The subsidiary will be wholly owned by Epistar, with a capital of NT$1 billion (US$33 million). In addition, it will take over the tasks of outsourced VCSEL epitaxial wafers and GaN-on-Si chips for applications of 3D sensing and power components. With the spin-off, Epistar aims to increase production efficiency by dividing working capacities and distributing resources. Meanwhile, Epistar will keep focusing on Mini LED and Micro LED.

Epistar Semiconductor is scheduled to be set up on October 1st, 2018 and will start producing 4-inch VCSEL wafers for data communication components and 6-inch wafers for 3D sensing components. It is expected that by Q4 the company will take orders from a client of 3D sensor and may start to profit next year.
