Pioneer to Mass Produce Its New 3D LiDAR Sensor in 2020

Pioneer and its subsidiary, Pioneer Smart Sensing Innovations (PSSI), announced their development of a mass-production 3D LiDAR sensor in a compact size and improved performance with an extended measurement distance and more. The new LiDAR sensor is expected to be equipped in level 3 and above autonomous driving vehicles and will be released in 1H20 and enter full scale production in the second half of 2020.

Pioneer and PSSI have been providing various companies with verification models from 2017 to 2018, and continued verifying performance through demonstration testing and other activities.

The new 3D-LiDAR sensor coming in autumn 2020 adopts Micro Electric Memory Systems (MEMS) mirror-based scanning method. In addition to offering high resolution, it has been downsized to less than 20% of previous model revealed in 2018 while achieving 1.5 to 2 times the measurement distance. There are three types of sensors with different angles of view and measurement distances, and an angle type, making it possible to accommodate customers’ needs by combining the different types.

Pioneer and PSSI also include non-automotive utilization of this 3D-LiDAR such as in security and traffic monitoring applications. The two company will jointly exhibit a variety of LiDAR solutions at CES 2020.
