Rubicon to Showcase Largest Sapphire Window Ever Produced at SPIE DSS

Rubicon Technology, a leading provider of sapphire substrates and products to the LED, semiconductor and optical markets, today announced that it will be showcasing the largest sapphire window ever produced at the SPIE Defense, Security and Sensing 2015 exhibition from April 20-24 at the Baltimore Convention Center in booth #1108. Very large, thick sapphire windows are in demand for defense, aerospace and optical applications.

Using technology developed over the past three years, the sapphire window Rubicon will display perfectly combines the durability and optical clarity necessary for use in defense applications. At 17 inches wide by 25 inches long and 1 inch thick, the as-ground window marks a manufacturing breakthrough in the sapphire industry. Previously, production methods were incapable of supporting the growth of sapphire crystals at this size.

“Through our new production process, we are confident that we have developed the largest sapphire window ever exhibited in public,” said Hap Hewes, Senior Vice President, Optical at Rubicon Technology. “Along with size, the window provides unmatched optical clarity and durability for customers seeking windows for high-performance applications. In the future, these windows will be utilized in both defense and industrial applications.”

Sapphire as a material is desirable in both defense and high-performance industries due to its hardness and strength, transparency in the visible and infrared spectrum, thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance, abrasion resistance, high melting point and chemical inertness. As a result, it is ideally suited for extreme environments in a range of industries where material durability is just as important as optical clarity.

Along with the large sapphire window, Rubicon will also have a wide variety of sapphire products on display at the show, including optical products of different sizes and crystal orientation, sapphire cores, ingots, domes, windows and blanks.
