Organisers of the UK hardware developers’ conference H/WExpo have announced that LED specialist supplier, Intelligent LED Solutions (ILS) and LED manufacturer OSRAM Opto-Semiconductors, will jointly present a free two-hour workshop that will be an introduction to LED technologies and associated products, in both visible and non-visible areas.

The workshop is intended to provide an update on LED technology for experienced engineers, and an introduction to the technology for engineers new to optoelectronics.

H/WExpo takes place at Cambourne near Cambridge on 27th and 28th April 2016. The event will be free to attend for engineers and scientists working in the field of hardware development.

"LEDs are playing an increasingly important role in hardware design,” said Adrian Amor, Director at Intelligent LED Solutions. “From visible applications such as display backlighting, or non-visible applications such as the UV curing in dental equipment or IR in CCTV, LED technology now has a very broad remit and in this workshop we will be sharing our extensive knowledge and experience in this field.”

The workshop will start with a brief LED history, and then move on to some general remarks about light, such as colour temperature and CRI. Some key aspects of LEDs in comparison to light bulbs will be explained, including explaining the many terms used in respect of light measurement such as Lumens, Flux and Lux.

There will also be a section on the concept of band structures, doping a semiconductor and PN junctions, each of which are essential to understanding the electrical properties of matter and LEDs in particular.

The workshop will take a closer look at an actual LED device and its key parameters, and will explore the types of LEDs available with considerations to which type of LED to use in a given application. The workshop will also cover the essential accessories required for LEDs, such as lens and reflectors, heat sinks, PCB and control.

“OSRAM and ILS are leaders in this field, so we are very pleased have them presenting a workshop at H/WExpo,” said Richard Blackburn, Conference Manager.  “This first hardware developers’ conference is shaping up to be a very worthwhile and productive event. We are delighted with the level of industry support.”

Covering topics such as hardware design, memory technology, touch technology, SoC, test equipment, display technology and reference design platforms, H/WExpo will consist of a series of workshops, an agenda of expert presentations and a vendor exhibition.

H/WExpo will be co-located with the Device Developers' Conference, an event for engineers that develop solutions based on embedded systems and realtime software.
