Osram Sets New Records with its New Phaser

Having further developed its successful Phaser 3000, Osram has added the Phaser 500 to its portfolio and is continuing to develop this laser-excited phosphor technology which was first introduced in 2012. The upgraded phaser with a record luminance of 3700 cd/mm² and smaller size compared to the predecessor version can be used in optical fibers with a diameter of less than one millimeter. Phaser 500 is therefore ideal for endoscopy, boroscopy and measurement applications that require a particularly high luminance. Holger Laabs, Product Marketing Medical and Industrial SSL at Osram summed up the benefits of the new product as follows: “In further developing the phaser we have achieved a considerable improvement in performance and at the same time made operating the phaser easier for the user”.

Its high luminance makes Phaser 500 ideal as a fiber light source for medical and industrial applications. Thanks to its small diameter of less than one millimeter it can be installed in extremely thin endoscopes, offering patients greater comfort. If used in existing endoscopes it will take up less space, leaving more room for other instruments. The lower weight also makes it easier for doctors and others to maneuver.

Record values in the laboratory

Phaser technology (the word is a combination of Phosphor and Laser) operates on the same principle as a converted LED. The blue light is not generated by an LED in the phaser, however. Instead it is focused on the phosphor by laser diodes at a very much higher power density. Whereas a standard white LED has a luminance of around 100 cd/mm2 , Phaser 500 achieves a luminance of 3700 cd/mm2 – a new laboratory record – thanks to improvements in the phosphors and the optical system.
