LightFair International 2012 Report III: GE Lighting Released Zhaga Standard LED Module and 100W Equivalent LED Bulb

At LightFair International 2012 in Las Vegas, LEDinside visited U.S. lighting giant GE Lighting’s pavilion to see the company’s latest endeavors in LED commercial lighting fixtures, LED light bulbs and LED modules.

GE’s 100W Equivalent LED Bulb

GE Lighting’s GE Energy Smart 27-watt LED bulb (an equivalent to 100W incandescent light bulb) was developed in the company’s East Cleveland, Ohio LED lab. The LED bulb, according to GE Lighting, incorporates proprietary synthetic jet technology that was enabled by GE’s collaboration with ecomaginationSM Challenge winner Nuventix, creator of LED cooling technologies for energy-efficient lighting.

GE said the LED bulb is scheduled to hit the market in the first half of 2012 and is expected to earn ENERGY STAR qualification. The product is still in the development and preparation for mass production. In fact, Philips’ 100W equivalent LED light bulb will hit the market one, two quarters earlier than GE’s LED light bulb.

However, GE LED bulb’s thermal dissipation and design is still eye-catching – the size is smaller than the like of Philips with lighter weight, which is due to Nuventix’s proprietary synthetic jet technology. The technology reduces the LED bulb’s thermal dissipation plates, which in turn makes the high-power LED bulb smaller.

The LED bulb’s luminous flux is 1600lm with wide beam angle. Notably, like Philips 100W equivalent LED bulb, GE LED bulb is also a dimmable warm white light bulb, with a color temperature of 3,000K and a lifespan of 2,5000 hours.

In addition, the LED light bulb’s design in the picture above is to pay tribute to Thomas Edison, the founder of GE, and the first light bulb invented by him.

According to GE, another advantage of this new LED bulb is that the bulb remains white even when it is off, which will make it more appealing to regular consumers.

LED Panel Lights Progressing

GE LED panel lights have attracted attention at previous lighting exhibitions. After a year, GE strengthens its LED panel light’s micro structure, forming a more conformable light color and light quality and improving the luminous efficacy. With the improvement, the panel light is suitable to adopt in commercial spaces.

All GE’s panel lights are dimmable. The ones in the back were exhibited at LFI 2011, the two in the front are new products released in 2012.

GE placed the light source in the middle of its new LED panel light, making the light round-shaped. GE said that the company will use this technology to design LED panel lights with different shapes.

As for other interior lighting fixtures, GE showcased 40W and 60W equivalent LED light bulbs, LED spot lights, LED flood lights (PAR20 and PAR30), LED ceiling fans (A15), LED mid-size global lamp (G25), LED small-size global lamp (G16.5), LED candle light (CA10) and LED night light (C7).

GE Sets Foot in LED Module Market to Seek Partnership

GE now not only manufactures lighting fixtures, but also set foot in the LED module and LED optical/mechanic product markets, providing its clients with more LED light sources. GE stressed that the company has been a member of the Zhaga Consortium, and it believes that Zhaga standard will become the mainstream in the future.

Perspectives from LEDinside

The fact that global big names GE, Osram and Philips have been proactively expanding their LED business indicates the LED market is on the verge of booming growth. Based on GE’s new LED products, the company aims to acquire considerable market shares in both consumer-based and commercial sectors.

Further, GE’s strategy in the LED module market still needs time to prove successful, but due to the fact that the LED market is taking off, it is a smart move of GE to aim to increase market acceptance and gain business partnership.
