Micro LED / Mini LED / COB LED Digital Displays Become the Center of Attention- ISE 2018 LIVE

Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2018 in the Netherlands is an international well-known exhibition for display. This international exhibition is taking place from February 6 to 9 in the Netherlands and has caused a lot of attention in the digital display industry.

The CLEDIS LED display technology of Japan’s Sony has gained a lot of attention in the industry. The main market of CLEDIS will substitute the current fine pitch LED digital display within certain size range. The main application is in large-size, sophisticated purposes such as car showrooms and museums. It has been successfully shipped to the clients in the US in 2017.

Macroblock cooperated with PlayNitride to exhibit Mini LED displays which reach a pitch size of P 0.75. The 300x300mm cabinet utilizes 125x225µm flip chip LEDs and adopts Macroblock’s driver IC MBI5359. The resolution is 400x400, and the refresh rate reaches 3840Hz.

Kerry Huang, Micro LED Business Manager of Macroblock, indicates that they showcase their Mini LED display with MBI5359 (pixel pitch: 0.75mm). Recently, the hottest Micro LEDs can be adopted in displays with various sizes ranging from wearable display to billboard or electronic billboard. At ISE 2018, Macroblock introduces the first LED driver IC MBI5359, which is suitable for Mini LED and Micro LED display solutions. As compared to a display made using traditional SMD LED or COB techniques, Micro LED displays have the advantage of being more efficient with a wider viewing angle, better reliability, moiré-free, etc. when applied to indoor display. There is no color shift from different viewing angles or cross talk within LEDs when compared to SMD LED.

Ledman releases P1.9 COB LED digital display.

LEDinside Viewpoints

At ISE 2018, Micro LED, Mini LED and COB digital displays are the three main focuses. Fine pitch LED digital displays aim to achieve more sophisticated results.

There are four advantages for Micro LED digital display to reach sophistication: high resolution, wide viewing angle, high brightness, high contrast and high color uniformity between modules. The main manufacturers include SONY and Samsung. According to LEDinside, more and more manufacturers are developing toward this market.

COB LED digital display can achieve high uniformity, good heat dissipation performance and high reliability. COB technology offers seamless solution which has moisture-proof, anti-static, anti-bump and dust-proof functions. The protection level reaches IP54. It avoids SMD LED damage problems caused by environmental or personal factors. Yet, one of the shortcomings is high cost. Besides, there are problems about reflectivity, repairing, yellowing and wavelength uniformity. The main manufacturers include Absen, Changchun Cedar, Ledman, DEEPSKY and Daktronics.
