Cree: Publication of SSL Criteria Will Boost the Growth of LED Industry — LEDforum 2009 Report (4)

The publication of relevant criteria for LED lighting will be of vital importance for the development of LED industry, said Lee Soo Ghee, Cree’s Vice President / General Manager Asia Pacific, at the LEDforum 2009. With the criteria set up, the quality of LED lighting will get controlled and standardized, which is expected to accelerate the promotion of LED lighting as well as more quickly realize the substantial drop in cost of energy saving, he said.

Mr Lee said that the standards on solid state lighting is now drafted by the U.S. Department of Energy with the assistance of relevant organizations including ANSI, NEMA, CIE, UL, IEC, NIST and CSA. Since 2008, several files have been published by DOE in succession, including the IES RP-16 which had made a definition of lighting projects, the ANSI C78.377, LM-79 and LM-80. The ANSI C78.377 mainly defines the color temperature of solid state lighting lamps; in accordance with the fluorescent lamps, it divides the color temperature of solid state lighting into 8 categories from 2700K to 6500K. The LM-79 gives the measuring methods of the luminous intensity and power of solid state lighting products; and the measurement standard of LED luminaires are provided in the LM-80.

In September 2008, the ENERGY STAR programme released the requirements for residential and non-residential solid state lighting products, setting the criteria on the efficacy, color temperature, color rendering, lifespan, etc of the current (short-term) and future luminaires.

Only the LED lighting products that meet the published criteria will provide satisfying quality, Mr Lee further pointed out. As one of the leading brands in the market, he said, Cree has developed a series of products for LED lighting applications, including single-chip and multi-chip LED packages. And the company is expecting to create more valuable attributions to promote the penetration of LED lighting in the market.
