Everlight Showcases Colorful Smart LED Streetlights at TILS 2015

Most of Everlight products highlighted at Taiwan International Lighting Show 2015 (TILS 2015) were for retail and office lighting applications, but it was its smart LED streetlight product that stood out the most at its booth.

The concept of the streetlight developed in partnership with Taiwanese LED driver and control manufacturer Billion is a bit similar to adding a color tunable LED lamp shade to the top of a normal LED light. Low power LEDs in the top of the light can be controlled and programmed by wireless 3G or power line connection to change different colors or color patterns, but the bottom of the light is still a white directional LED light.

Research and development of the streetlight began in 2014, said Schpeltor Chiou, Engineer, Lighting Product Management Div., Road Lighting Project Management Department, Everlight.

The luminaire is controlled using Billion’s Intelligent Streetlight Control and Management System (LCMS), explained Popeye Chiu, FAE, R&D Department, Power and Energy Management Division, Billion. A 3G wireless system using radio frequency or power line device is used to transmit the luminaire’s data to a cloud server, said Chiu. The product is mainly designed for outdoor street or infrastructure decoration purposes, and has already been used in applications in Northern Taiwan including Taipei Xinyi area, New Taipei City, Banqiao and other areas, said Chiou.

The LED streetlight has been installed in certain areas in Northern Taiwan, and Everlight and Billion will be rolling the product out in other global markets soon. (LEDinside)

China, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and Europe might be potential markets where people might show interest in this product. The company is also looking to South America and Saudi Arabia markets at the moment, he added. As for introducing the product to Southeast Asia markets, Billion will be working with system integrators in one of the country in this region, said Chiu.

“Manufacturers are working on value adding now,” said Chiu. “The Banqiao city government estimates the LED streetlights saved the region NT $20 million to NT $30 million (US $640,000 to 960,000).”

The two engineers also brought to attention certain issues that may arise when installing LED streetlights. Sometimes there can be unexpected human tampering involved in the form of people stealing power from the lights, or even the top of the LED lamp, said Chiu. In certain global regions, such as Malaysia there might be unstable power voltage and even ant nest issues, said Everlight engineer Chiou. In colder climate regions, for instance Canada the luminaire heat dissipation can even attract small animals and birds to make nests on top or inside of the luminaire casing. “These are all unexpected situations when you’re designing the luminaire,” said Chiou.

The lights can be seen at TILS 2015, which will run from March 25-28 at TWTC Nangang Exhibition Hall in Taipei, Taiwan.
