Light+Building 2012 Report IV: Zumtobel

Austrian major lighting company Zumtobel, one of the leading companies in the European lighting industry, has been striving to make inroads into the LED lighting market over the recent years.

According to LEDinside, the company’s exhibition area at Light+Building 2012 was mostly located at Hall 2. Aside from the mother company Zumtobel, subsidiary companies TRIDONIC (control system and power module) and LEDON (light source) also exhibited at Hall 2.

Zumtobel is a high-end product maker and cooperates with many world-class lighting designers. Unlike other participating companies’ emphasis on technologies, the company focuses on lighting design and the atmosphere created with light and shadow.

Due to the fact that Zumtobel sells “lighting” and not lighting products, the company has conducted in-depth research on humans’ preferences of lighting. For example, the company puts a lot of thoughts into the display lighting at Light+Building 2012, using the main light source and the RGB background lighting to adequately present their products. The company also seeks joint efforts with a number of schools and research institutes, including Germany’s Darmsdad University and Austria Health Organization.

The company’s display panel at the expo was nothing short of extraordinary. The LED lights were placed at the front and back of the light panel – the front ones lightened up the words, and the back ones created a different mood. The control system was able to control all the details.

The light “eL MASTERPIECE” hanging above Zumtobel's exhibition area was made by renowned Italian designer Daniel Libeskind, worth 350 thousand Euros.

“eL MASTERPIECE” weighs 160 kilograms, and the user can use remote control to alter its RGB lights. The light contains 23 carats of gold, and was not available for purchase at the expo.
