LIA Calls on NMO to Test LED Lamps

Some members of the Lighting Industry Association (LIA) rencently complaints that a number of LED retrofit lamps not delivering on some manufacturers’ claims, which has led to the trade body calling on the National Measurement Office (NMO) to test lamps.

The LIA’s COO Peter Hunt said it will team up with the NMO to check the validity of product claims and aims to test “between 50 and 60 lamps of various types, with 20 of each being purchased in the marketplace from a number of sources.”

Hunt said: “Members who produce compliant products had said that it is difficult to compete in a market which is increasingly populated by products which make ambitious claims about performance and life. As an association we are keen that end users should have a positive experience when first buying LED retrofit lamps by buying products which deliver what they claim.”

When Lighting asked Hunt what penalty those making inaccurate claims about their products could expect to receive, he said: “The NMO have a number of measures they can invoke which are published on their website.”

He also said the decision about whether to publish any of the test results would be taken by the NMO. “The publication of any results or any actions are entirely at the discretion of the NMO”.
