Japan Hopes to Increase Indoor LED Lighting Penetration to 30% by 2030

Japan currently has the lowest global GDP per capita of energy usage. The average American household uses twice that of Japan and four times that in instrumentation. LED/OLED Lighting has a Prosperous Future


Japan’s Ministry of Industry (MOI) hopes to replace 60 percent of incandescent bulbs with LED/OLED before 2030. The fluorescent lamp is still the leader in household lighting with high luminosity and cost-efficiency. Technological growth for fluorescent lighting however has reached its limit. LED/OLED on the other hand still have room to grow, with luminosity ratio increasing by 20 every 10 years. It is predicted that this trend will continue till at least 2016.The industry hopes to see a continual increase in LED/OLED lighting luminosity efficiency as well as decrease in prices to a more affordable level.


LED light source manufacturers in Japan, American, Europe and other regions produce LED lighting with luminosity of only 80 lm, however in 3 to 4 years LED lamps with luminosity of 120-150 lm will become commercialized. The entire cost for the product including bulb expense and electricity costs will make LEDs more cost efficient than other energy saving bulbs. Manufacturers predict that LEDs will be able to reach 200-300 lm by 2020.


According to predictions by the Japanese Machinery Federation, by 2030 LED/OLED lighting will reach a penetration rate of 30 percent in the Japanese indoor lighting market, making up 20 percent of energy consumption. The benefit towards energy conservation and carbon emission is expected to have a yearly reduction of 18.7 billion kwh, or 7 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
