South Korean Giants Samsung and LG End OLED Patent Dispute

Samsung announced on September 23rd that the patent dispute with LG has finally come to an end. The two South Korean firms decided that the best method for solving the dispute was to put aside differences and cooperate instead.

Last September, LG filed a damage suit against Samsun claiming that Samsung’s Galaxy Note infringed on 7 of LG’s patent OLED technology and demanded compensation. In December of that year, Samsung filed a countersuit against LG for similar reasons also demanding compensation.

In November of last year, Samsung filed a countersuit with local Intellectual Property Tribunal against LG claiming that patents held by the company were invalid. LG in response also claimed that patents held by Samsung were invalid.

From that point the two South Korean giants remained locked in a heated battle over patent infringement claims until recently when the despite was finally put to rest.

According to the South Korean media, 9.1 inch LCD panel total global delivery for the first half of this year reached 34 billion. LG’s delivery numbers made up 25.2 percent of that with 88.96 million deliveries. Samsung deliveries made up 20.7 percent of the total global numbers.
