A new manufacturer in the lighting industry, Stack, has developed a smart LED bulb that does not require App interactions, according to a TechCrunch report.

Stack’s Alba smart LED bulb’s in-built sensors, sets it apart from Philips Hue and other smart lights on the market. The sensors allow the bulbs to adjust according to the environment. Thus, users do not have to constantly rely on App interactions. The company also claimed at a Q&A session during a press conference that the smart bulbs can learn from user behavior and adjust accordingly.

Yet, the bulb still comes with an App. The purpose of the App, as readers may have already guessed, enables customized programming of the smart LED bulbs and indicating when they should light up or not. Using communication protocol Zigbee, only a single hub is required for residential applications, said Stack CEO Neil Joseph.

For retail applications, the bulb aims to measure customer traffic and motion throughout the store, said Joseph. The bulbs will also be integrated with iBeacon as a part of interactivity with customers, while in homes the bulbs are expected to change color temperature throughout the day. In the morning, the bulbs will be a more bluish hue before turning into warmer white colors as night falls.

The LED lights come with a 50,000 hour lifetime, which is expected to last at least 30 or more years for home applications, and 12 years in commercial settings. Stack also noted their LED bulbs are 80 percent more energy efficient than standard lights.

Similar to other smart lighting on the market, Alba smart bulbs will not be cheap. The bulbs come with a hefty price tag of US $150 for a two bulb and hub set, while the standard bulb price will be US $60. The company is taking preorders at the moment, and will not be shipping the lights till first quarter in 2015.
