According to the latest price survey by LEDinside, an LED research division of TrendForce, in 2010 Q4, demand from LED applications still has not recovered, including continued inventory adjustment of large-size panels and lower-than-expected demand from general lighting. As a result, pressure of LED price decline extends from 2010 Q3. Among them, price of LED for large-size panel applications fell by 5% -9%, with most substantial decline in TV backlight applications; high power LED lighting applications declined by more than 12%. Due to relatively stable demand from mobile phone applications, LED prices in this segment are fairly stable with a mere 3% seasonally adjusted decrease.

Japan Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII) has introduced the S-5855A Series, a PWM output temperature sensor IC for LED lighting designs. It’s said that city of Novato is in the process of conducting a streetlight test to get public feedback in its selection of energy-efficient fixtures. Four LED fixtures have been installed between Rowland Boulevard and Adele Drive, and four induction fixtures were installed between Arthur Drive and Yukon Way. All lights being considered would reduce monthly energy costs by about 40 percent and reduce routine maintenance costs three to four times that of the current fixtures.

Taiwan Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association (PIDA) has recently predicted that the local LED industry will grow at a moderate pace in 2011. According to PIDA , the output value of the global LED industry grew an increase of 68 percent from US$9 billion in 2009 to US$15.1 billion in 2010, and the number will further increase by 38 percent to US$20.8 billion in 2011.

IXYS Corporation has released an innovative inductor-based 6-channel White LED driver LDS8763, which can drive up to 72 WLEDs in six strings with up to 12 LEDs per string. The LDS8763 is delivered with factory programmed LED current at 20, 25, or 30 mA per string and 1.5% channel-to-channel current matching. Internal PWM pulse generator with duty cycle regulated by external DC voltage applied to the PWM pin adjusts its LED brightness.

AIXTRON SE today announced an order from mainland China. HC SemiTek placed an order for six additional CRIUS® Gallium Nitride epitaxial growth reactors. The six machines in the 31x2-inch wafer configuration have been delivered to the company’s modern facility in Wuhan.

The Buffalo Bisons are going to install the largest high definition LED video screen in all of minor league baseball. Made by Daktronics, Inc., the new video board will measure 80’ x 33’ and will come with a price tag of $2.5 million. It will be completed before the start of the 2011 season. The new green lighting system will cost about $750,00- upfront. It's estimated that the new lights will save the city about $565,000 in utility costs over the next 25 years.

   

Recently, RSI Visual systems, Inc. has completed a visual system upgrade of the state-of-the art RSI Raster xT Image Generator integrated with the new Christie Matrix SIM LED illuminated simulation projection system for Sabre Updates, Inc. on the B747-200 Full Flight Simulator, located at the Kalitta Air Training Center in Ypsilanti, Michigan. LED chipmaker Formosa Epitaxy 's December revenues fell 25% sequentially to NT$300 million (US$10.23 million), and revenues for 4Q10 came to NT$1.1 billion, down 23% sequentially. But the company's full-year revenues increased 121.5% from 2009 to NT$4.64 billion thanks to strong TV backlight demand.

It’s reported that "Megatex", a Bulgarian LED and LCD technologies company has developed a screen combining LED technology with renewable solar energy, which can be mounted at places without electric power supply. The panel has a 5 KW power to charge the screen. The new screen will be used outdoors and can be installed on stadiums; it can be used for concerts or as a billboard.

Lately, Samsung Electronics has showcased a new model of its edge-type LED-backlit LCD panel at CES Unveiled, a press conference prior to the 2011 International CES. According to a Samsung staffer, different with the case where LED backlight units are set on all the four sides ,they placed backlight units on the right and left sides of the panel so that the power consumption of the panel can be reduced.  

A power control IC company iWatt, Inc., has launched two primary-side-regulated, leading- and trailing-edge-dimmable, AC/DC Digital PWM Controllers which are available in 100V/230VAC offline LED lighting applications. Both LED driver ICs are pin compatible with the previous-generation iW3610, but offer wider dimmer compatibility and introduce new hot-plug support, where the user can swap the LED engine without recycling the input power for the LED driver.
