On March 3, 2008, Carmanah Technologies Corporation announced a two-year contract to supply the State of New Jersey's Lottery Division with LED edge-lit signage. The contract, valued at up to $500,000, extends from March 1, 2008 until February 28, 2010. Under the terms of the contract, Carmanah will provide custom edge-lit hanging window signs and instant ticket dispenser signs that will be used to help New Jersey Lottery retailers promote the sales of both instant ticket and online lottery tickets throughout the state.

Allegro MicroSystems has announced a new series of RGB multichip LED modules that provide a range of high-powered ALGaInP red, and InGaN green and blue LEDs that can be used in general lighting applications, amusement and gaming equipment, and for backlighting TFT displays. Each module combines eight LEDs in four or eight separate channels.

Cree, Inc., a market leader in LED solid-state lighting, yesterday (3rd) announced that it has completed the acquisition of privately held LED Lighting Fixtures, Inc. ("LLF"). Cree's agreement to acquire LLF was announced February 8, 2008.

Dialight Corporation has received a major order for its newly developed, high-intensity LED lights for military shelters, which have been approved for use by the U.S. Marine Corps. Complying with MIL-STD-461E, RE102 and CE102 for EMI/RFI shielding, they can also be used for vehicle interior and shipboard lighting, as well as for general illumination requiring high light output.

Visitors at Mercy Medical Center in Rogers, Arkansas, will have a bright canvas to paint on: a 14 foot-long interactive LED wall installed by Philips Electronics as a gift to the new hospital.Named the "Imagination Light Canvas," the display has 1,420 touch-sensitive pixel elements, letting visitors finger-paint with light. Images persist for a few minutes, and six people can play simultaneously.    

Martin Schubert, a doctoral student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., has won the $30,000 Lemelson-Rensselaer Prize for his work on light-emitting diodes, or LEDs. Schubert developed a new, polarized type of LED that could allow their widespread use as light sources for liquid-crystal displays in televisions, computers, cell phones and other devices.

LIGHT emitting diode (LED) has been introduced to Swaziland by the WorldWide Energy Savers (WES) Pty Ltd. WES is a company based in South Africa known as WESLITE development. Cree has announced that Tiajin Economic Development Area (TEDA) has joined its LED City program. TEDA and Tianjin Polytechnic University are collaborating with Cree to introduce LED lighting initiative in mainland China. Abacus has teamed up with LED lighting specialist Osram to create a distribution business division to address the solid state lighting market.Called AbacusLED, the venture will market the Osram range of discrete LEDs and LED lighting systems together with electronic driver and thermal management technologies.It will carry other distribution lines including Everlight, Texas Instruments, National Semiconductor, ST Microelectronics, Power Integrations, 3M and Aavid Thermalloy.

The "Design-Build studio" teamed up with the tech whizzes from Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories to create an LED Coffee Table dubbed The Wave. Mitsubishi Chemical Corp, a unit of Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corp, of Tokyo, Japan has agreed to acquire the near-ultraviolet LED business of Mitsubishi Cable Industries Ltd (including the facilities and the technology to produce the chips) at the end of March for ¥1.5bn (about $13.9m), reports Nikkei Net. The Mitsubishi Cable near-UV LED manufacturing operations in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture will be moved to Mitsubishi Chemical’s facilities in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture.
