Hubbell Lighting, a world leader in lighting innovation, announced today that Alera Lighting has launched two new linear lighting solutions—the Plank 7” LED (LP7) and the Curv Radial Lens LED, a new addition to the Curv Radial family.

LED light source module has matured these years. More LED packages are suitable for lighting applications have emerged including chip-on-board (COB) and flip chip. Light Polymers is introducing the world's first liquid-crystal-based remote phosphor flexible film. In LED lighting, a remote phosphor film moves the blue-to-white-light converting phosphor material from the LED itself to the substrate that is located a short distance from the LEDs. This has many benefits in terms of efficiency improvement (20 to 30%), reduced glare, improved reliability and better uniformity of brightness and color reproduction. The new material from Light Polymers offers the same performance benefits, but at much lower cost and the ability to deposit on flexible substrates (current solutions are on rigid substrates).

When discussing the properties of LEDs, the word ‘color’ immediately comes to our minds; and there are so many facets to our perception of color! An important one is color consistency, which is really a blanket qualifier for a variety of phenomena. Today, I will discuss color consistency at the level of the LED component (i.e. the white emitter including an LED die and phosphors). Keep in mind, though, that this is only part of the story, and eventually the system-level behavior is what matters.

Appropriately themed “Envision the future of lights” after its mission, the 20th edition of the Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition had participants sharing inspirational ideas and innovative technologies. Dialogue of this nature is essential in shaping the future of the lighting industry. Held from 9 – 12 June 2015, the fair spanned across 21 halls and occupied 225,000 sqm. The show closed with a 4.7% increase in visitor figures from the previous year, totalling 135,990 professional visitors (2014:129,885) from 131 countries and regions including over 5500 domestic and overseas delegates. These numbers were duly matched by a record-breaking 2,698 exhibitors (2014: 2,621) representing 27 countries and regions.

Background Chedraui is one of the top supermarket chains in México, with additional stores in the United States, employing over 35,000 people. They operate over 217 locations, 150 of which are over 7,000 square meters. Project Chedraui wanted to reduce their building maintenance costs and save energy while improving in-store light quality. Specifically, increase the color rendering index (CRI) so products would appear more attractive to shoppers and result in increased sales.

Plessey announced today that its dotLED range, designed specifically for wearable applications, has been expanded with a wider selection of colours, including red, green and blue. The extremely small LED die have a footprint of only 0.2mm x 0.2mm, which makes them a perfect fit for low profile electronic wearable applications.

The Cruise’s popularity as a vacation option is ever-increasing.  The trend has led to bigger and better ships, regularly reaching mammoth proportions to ferry eager tourists to paradise and back.   Bigger ships mean bigger ports, like Florida’s two-story, 187,500 square foot Canaveral Cruise Terminal 1. Opened to the public in December of 2014, the terminal on the south side of the harbor is able to process ships of 6,000 passengers or more, while offering retail, dining and entertainment establishments.

The growing influence of the Industrial Internet (which connects the physical and digital worlds) is leading to designs that combine LED with wireless sensors and data-transmitting technology. When used in a ‘smart city’ environment, this kind of infrastructure is capable of far more than just lighting, providing real safety benefits for citizens. Examples of successful use of LED for safety purposes have been already implemented in cities such as Bauru in Brazil and La Garrotxa in Spain.

The Statue of Liberty, an icon of freedom for nearly 130 years, now shines like never before thanks to Musco Lighting. Working with the National Park Service, Musco developed a custom-designed LED lighting solution for the Statue of Liberty. The lighting system uses precise optics to highlight all the aesthetic details of the monument while reducing the amount of light projected into the night sky.

All of us have, at some point or another, complained about the use of lumens as a metric – for a variety of reasons. First, lumens are not very accurate as a proxy for perceived brightness. Second, there is a temptation to increase lumens by ‘cheating’, for instance on the chromaticity of a lamp – ponder this next time you are subjected to a depressingly greenish fluorescent lamp! Third, the lumen race pushes the industry to compromise on competing aspects, especially color rendition. If two LEDs emit the same number of optical watts, but one generates more long-wavelength photons to properly render deep-red tones, it is by definition penalized in terms of lumens.

The more than two million visitors who travel to Mount Rushmore National Memorial each year will now enjoy an enhanced night time viewing experience, thanks to an innovative new lighting system with an LED light source that was recently installed at the memorial. A newly published study from the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute shows that improving the uniformity of lighting in parking lots can increase the sense of safety and security, as well as provide up to an additional 75% energy savings by lowering total light levels.

Expo Milan 2015 was the inspiration for the largest roadway lighting project in Europe to date. Milan, Italy expects 20 million visitors for the event, which runs May through October. In preparation, 100,000 of AEC Illuminazione’s fixtures with LUXEON M LEDs were installed, delivering impressive light quality, energy efficiency and environmental benefits. Milan will save 10 million euro in energy cost and emit 20,000 fewer tons of CO2 in its first year alone.

Abby Wambach, the captain of the World Cup’s U.S. Women's Soccer Team, enters a dark stadium with a poorly incandescent lit soccer goal. She proceeds to decimate the ugly row of lights suspending from the top of the soccer goal by making perfectly aimed scores, and eventually switches on the newly installed LED lights with a remote control.

The Iowa Events Center's Wells Fargo Arena -- home to the Iowa Energy, the Iowa Barnstormers, and the Iowa Wild -- will take its entertainment experience to the next level thanks to a new, innovative LED lighting solution designed and manufactured by Musco Lighting. The arena is celebrating its 10th anniversary with US $2.5 million in renovations.
