LEDforum Taipei 2010: LED Market and Innovative Applications

LEDforum 2010 is a two-day event organized by LEDinside and the Taiwan Industrial Technology Research Institute. The agenda for the first day covers on LED components and equipment trends. Focusing on the future direction of LED industry, LEDforum is an advanced conference to grasp new market trend and future opportunities.

On 1st of November, LEDforum 2010 Taipei will be covering the component field of the LED industry.

George Craford, SSL Fellow, Philips Lumileds
George Craford is a fellow of the IEEE and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He will present the development of Philips Lumileds' next stage LED component, and the analysis of lumen / watt, lumen per dollar, and quality of light.

Jia Lee, Director of Marketing, VEECO
On LED manufacturing equipment, Jia Lee, Director of Marketing, MOCVD, at Veeco Instruments Inc. will explain how advancements in MOCVD technology reduce LED manufacturing costs. Lee will also discuss how Veeco’s TurboDisc K465i minimizes variation in each of the key binning criteria to reduce yield losses, as well as how the design of the K465i achieves high productivity.

Dr. Ming Jiunn Jou, General manager of Epistar Co.
Dr. Jou will share with forum participants DOE’s roadmap of LED lighting application, and will provide detailed information on the LED's luminous efficacy, luminous flux, and packaged device price. Additionally, Dr Jou will also cover the roadmap of Epistar's lighting class LED chip development.

Marc McConnaughey , Vice President, Rambus Inc.
LEDs are driving a revolution in lighting markets, enabling exciting new lighting products that are brighter, richer in color, lower in power, and environmentally safe. Industry veteran Marc McConnaughey, Vice President, Strategic Development Lighting and Display Technology Division of Rambus will discuss why microstructure light management is an important element of LED lighting technology. Specifically, Marc will highlight what approaches are needed in performance, cost and manufacturing efficiencies at the component, subsystem and luminaire level. Attendees will hear how Rambus’ MicroLens™ light guide solutions for LED edge lighting enable superior performance at lower costs through a high-volume manufacturing process.

Dr. Koukou Suu , ULVAC Technologies, Inc.
Dr. Koukou Suu, General Manager, Institute of Semiconductor & Electronics Technologies, at ULVAC Technologies, will talk about the topic “LED Equipment Trends” in the LEDforum 2010.
He will discuss the trends of the LED market and technology in Japan. He will also discuss the technological key element for the LED manufacture and Ulvac's total solution for LED vendors.

Dr. Alfred Felder, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors
Dr. Alfred Felder, President and CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors will also be speaking at LEDforum 2010. Dr Felder will discuss Osram’s latest development in various applications, including architectural lighting, automotive lighting, micro-projector light source, and OLED light source. Dr Felder will also share with forum participants his perspectives on outlook of the global LED market.

Fanny Huang / Chairman and President of Excellence Opto. Inc.,
Ms. Huang will highlight the market status and future outlook of the LED traffic signal market and the LED roadway light market. In addition, Huang will discuss current specifications and standards of these two outdoor lighting applications in main countries, the performance of LED roadway lights promoted in main cities, and technological development trend will also be addressed.

James, Mu-Tao Chu, Director of W Division Opto-Electronics Device and System Applications Division / Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)
Dr. Chu will discuss Taiwanese manufacturers' status in worldwide patent. Taiwan takes the first place for LED output, but the second place for LED value in the world. In terms of patent, take one of major markets, the US market as an example, the total patent of top five Taiwan’s LED manufacturers are still less than one of top five manufacturers in the world. Therefore, Dr. Chu will discuss the differences between business operation of foreign manufacturers and Taiwan manufacturers, as well as strategies Taiwan manufacturer should carry out.

Yu-Ting Hsiao, Director, RD Center of TAI Technology
Dr. Hsiao will point out the technology trend of LED thermal dissipated substrate. Although there are many advantages of LED lighting, only 20% of electric energy transfers into luminous energy, and 80% of electric energy becomes heat. LED's luminous efficacy is often limited by dissipation. Therefore, if LED thermal dissipation substrates could be more cost competitive and offer better dissipation, it would accelerate the development of LED applications.
