AUO Expects Micro LED Commercialization in 1-2 Years

Several exhibitors attending Touch Taiwan 2019 showcased their latest Micro LED displays and applications at the show including Taiwan-based panel manufacturer AU Optronics (AUO) presenting a 12.1-inch Micro LED automotive display. Paul Peng, chairman of AUO, indicated that commercialized Micro LED products will hit the market in one to two years.

The panel market showed decline in 2019 due to soft global economy and the U.S.-China trade dispute. Despite that AUO has also been impacted by the slow growth, the company is pushing high value products development to overcome challenges came with difficult environment.

AUO’s Micro LED automotive display was built by AUO’s proprietary transfer technology which is capable of transferring 50,000 to 60,000 LEDs per transfer. The company is also developing further repairing technology.

Peng sees that Micro LED product will be applied in large sized PIC (public information display) and small sized displays for VR in the coming one or two years. As for the automotive display, due to longer verification process with automobile companies, the Micro LED panel is scheduled to release in five years.
