Samsung to End LCD Production and Turn to Advanced Display Technology

Samsung Display announced that it will stop LCD panel production by the end of this year and turns its business to OLED and other display technology.

Samsung Display currently has LCD production lines in China and South Korea and is planning to turn one of its LCD facilities in South Korea into quantum dot screen production, reported Reuters. As for the facilities in China, Samsung has not yet decided the further operation.

The display industry has been gone through a tough time due to oversupply and price competition. LG Display announced earlier that it will end domestic LCD TV panel production by the end of the year. Now with the world spreading coronavirus epidemic which led to cancelation and postpone of most big events including Olympics, global end market decline is thus expected.

With Samsung quitting LCD business, the oversupply issue of the panel industry might lessen and other panel makers including AUO, Innolux and BOE could benefit. At the same time, Korean panel producers are turning their focus into new display technologies covering OLED and Micro LED, pushing the industry to move toward another direction and initiate a new battlefield.
