Rambus edge-lit LED technology in need of licensees

Rambus is seeking for potential licensees for its edge-lit LED technology, which was acquired from Global Lighting Technology, a Taiwanese company set up by an American mid-Westerner called Jeff Parker last December.

Tim Messegee, vp marketing at Rambus, pointed out "Jeff approached us because he liked our licensing modeland we thought we'd diversify into this area." Rambus took over the GLT R&D team.

According to Messegee, Edge-Lit LED will be used in general lighting where, they provide a more uniform light, often requiring fewer LED bulbs, than the conventional LED array. And Edge-lit LEDs are more controllable and flexible than array LEDs, allowing light to be thrown off the walls or to perform as a spotlight.

In addition, Rambus has a development agreement with GE for bringing the products to commercial acceptability. "In a year or two there will be lighting panels with this technology", said Messegee.
