San’an Opto Hit Hard by Typhoon Meranti

San’an Opto announced last Thursday it has temporarily shut down its LED manufacturing sites in Xiamen, Fujian province of China for repairs, due to damages caused by Typhoon Meranti last weekend.

The company’s production would be affected for one whole week, but repairs are scheduled to be completed by Sept. 20, 2016.

According to the company’s statement, the strongest typhoon to hit China in the 21 years caused some of its vacuum pumps, water cooling machines, and other auxiliary equipment to malfunction, and require immediate replacements or repairs.

None of its employees at affiliated companies San’an Optoelectronics or San’an Integrated Circuit sustained any injuries from the violent typhoon.

The company’s main LED fabs and other major MOCVD equipment were unaffected, but segments of the factory walls had collapsed during the typhoon and were being restored.

The Category 5 Typhoon reached the shores of Taiwan on Sept. 14, 2016 before moving West to Fujian Province in China has caused in total US $2.5 billion in Fujian, and destroyed more than 18,300 houses as of Sept. 17, 2016, according to an AP report.

The typhoon has claimed 28 lives and 15 people are reported missing in Fujian Province.

Super Typhoon Meranti maximum sustained winds reached 230 kilometers per hour (kph) faster than a F1 race car, while gusts even reached 280 kph, reported CNN.

More than 18,300 houses have been damaged in the typhoon’s wake, and an 800 year old bridge dating back from the Song Dynasty has been completely destroyed by the storm, said local authorities.
