Samsung to Form QD TV Alliance

Samsung Electronics is taking the lead in forming a quantum dot (QD) TV alliance to counter OLED TV manufacturers, reported Korean media the Pulse.

“The quantum dot-based light emitting diode (QLED) TV that we will unveil at CES 2017 next month features the best possible picture quality,” said an official from Samsung Electronics on Sunday. “We expect more electronics makers would manufacture quantum dot TVs after the trade show and we will share our technology and know-how with them,” he added.

Samsung has been an advocate of QD technology, announcing plans of scaling up investments in the technology earlier in 2016, and recently showing interest in acquiring major QD manufacturer QD Vision. The merits of QD TV is its wide gamut color performance matches OLED TV, while having a longer lifetime and better off-angle viewing, according to Samsung Electronics.

OLED TV manufacturers including LG Electronics, Panasonic, Philips, and Germany’s Grundig and Lowere intend t0 lead the next generation HD TV market with thinner OLED TVs. Sony also announced plans of launching an OLED TV next year. Earlier in September, LG Electronics announced it had formed an OLED TV alliance, which might explain Samsung’s decision to found its own QD TV alliance.
