Rubicon Technology, Inc., a leading provider of sapphire substrates and products to the LED, semiconductor, and optical markets, announced that it will showcase large-diameter patterned sapphire substrates (PSS) as well as its line of 6”polished sapphire wafers for the LED industry at LED Korea 2014 at COEX, Seoul, Korea, February 12-14, 2014. Rubicon will exhibit its line of sapphire products in Booth #4707.

Technology innovation is helping companies in the LED supply chain prepare for dramatic growth in LED lighting. Most high-brightness LED manufacturers etch a pattern into the sapphire wafers in order to both improve epitaxial growth and extract more light from each chip. Patterned sapphire substrates have been available for purchase in smaller diameters, but Rubicon is the first to offer highly customizable 6” and 8” PSS. Rubicon is providing LED chip manufacturers with a ready-made source of PSS in 4”, 6” and 8” -diameters to serve the needs of the rapidly growing LED general lighting industry.

Rubicon offers fully customizable sub-micron patterning capability with tight dimensional tolerances, within ±0.1 µm. With an edge exclusion zone as small as 1 mm, Rubicon offers LED chip manufacturers more usable area to maximize the number of chips per wafer. Patterning is available in a range of shapes including cone, dome and pyramid, and in a range of orientations.

Rubicon will have a number of sapphire products for the LED market on display in Booth #4707 including sapphire cores and ingots and large diameter wafers ranging in size from 4 inches to 6- and 8- inches as well as information about patterned large-diameter sapphire substrates.
