Portland Tests Blue LED Bicycle Detector Lights

U.S. city Portland has installed blue LED lights next to red traffic lights at a six-way intersection to notify cyclists their bicycles have been detected, and traffic light will be changing soon to allow them pass through, according to a Oregon Live report.

The city streets are installed with underground magnetic signal-detection loops that detect metal in bicycles, and traffic signals will soon be changing. Most of the time the bicycles fail to align with the detectors, resulting in unchanging traffic signals. The blue LED lights allows cyclists to know whether their bike has been detected.

The blue LED lights that cost US$ 125 each are installed at the intersection between Northeast Sandy Boulevard, 57th Avenue and Alameda Street.
