Tokushima, Japan - 6 March 2024: Nichia, the world's largest LED manufacturer and inventor of the high-brightness blue and white LED, has started mass production of the new UV-B (308nm) and UV-A (330nm) LEDs in its popular 434 Series package.
While maintaining the compact 3.5mm x 3.5mm size of the 434 Series, the newly launched UV-B and UV-A LEDs deliver industry-leading outputs of 90mW and 100mW respectively (at 350mA), thus maximizing flux density. With a total input power of 1.8W, the power conversion efficiencies are amongst the highest in the industry, delivering 5.1% at 308nm and 5.7% at 330nm. In addition to Nichia’s popular 280nm, 365nm, and 405nm UV LEDs, the new 308nm and 330nm products are expected to advance the transition from UV mercury lamps to LEDs in most of applications.
In addition to being an alternative technology to mercury lamps, the 308nm UV-B LED can also be used to control diseases (e.g. powdery mildew) and insect pests (e.g. spider mites) by irradiating strawberries and other crops with UV light.
Since the initial announcement in December, Nichia has received many inquiries and requests for samples related to agriculture, healthcare, and various other fields, further supporting the excitement of the product launch. Product samples of discrete LEDs or LEDs mounted on boards to expedite design efforts are already available and can be requested through Nichia's sales representatives or the Contact Form via Nichia's website.
Nichia promises to continue developing UV LEDs with improved performance to help solve various social issues including the realization of a mercury-free society and carbon neutrality.
