[News] Qaztomat Chooses Philips Horticulture LED for 10-Hectare Expansion in Kazakhstan

Signify, the world leader in lighting, announces that Qaztomat, one of the largest high-tech greenhouse operations in Central Asia, has selected Philips Horticulture LED Solutions as the lighting supplier for a new 10-hectare greenhouse expansion in Ekibastuz, Kazakhstan. The project will increase Qaztomat’s total greenhouse area from 30 to 40 hectares, further strengthening its position as a leading producer of fresh tomatoes in the region.
Located in the Pavlodar region of Kazakhstan, Qaztomat operates a state-of-the-art greenhouse complex that produces more than 15,000 tons of tomatoes annually and employs approximately 450 people. The facility supplies fresh tomatoes to major retail chains throughout Kazakhstan and export markets in neighboring countries.

Operating in a region known for long and severe winters, Qaztomat has continuously invested in technologies that enable stable year-round cultivation. The greenhouse complex utilizes thermal energy and captured CO₂ from a neighboring power generation facility, creating a unique example of industrial symbiosis where resources that would otherwise be wasted are used to support greenhouse production. Advanced climate control systems, hydroponic cultivation, water recirculation and automation help maintain optimal growing conditions despite extreme outdoor temperatures.

For the new expansion, Qaztomat selected Philips GreenPower LED toplighting force across 10 hectares. Installation is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The decision to invest in LED lighting was driven by the growing importance of energy efficiency in greenhouse production. “Last year, electricity tariffs increased by 33%, and we do not expect this to be the last increase,” says Ansat Zhanataev, CEO of Qaztomat. “Today, electricity accounts for more than 40% of our production costs. Implementing energy-efficient solutions is no longer optional; it is essential for maintaining a sustainable and competitive business.”

“As energy costs continue to rise, growers are increasingly looking for solutions that improve both efficiency and controllability,” says Rita Nozdrina, Commercial Sales Leader for Eastern Europe & Nordics Philips Horticulture LED Solutions at Signify. “Qaztomat has consistently demonstrated a forward-looking approach to greenhouse production, combining advanced cultivation technologies with smart resource utilization. We are proud to support their expansion with Philips LED lighting and contribute to reliable, year-round tomato production in one of the world’s most challenging greenhouse climates.”

When evaluating available LED solutions, Qaztomat focused not only on energy efficiency, but also on the experience and reliability of its technology partner. “LED lighting is still a relatively new technology for many growers in our region, so it was important for us to work with a supplier that has extensive experience and a proven track record,” continues Zhanataev. “From a risk-management perspective, we wanted our first LED project to be with a company that has demonstrated expertise through many successful installations worldwide. That confidence led us to choose Philips Horticulture LED Solutions.”

The project further strengthens the adoption of advanced greenhouse technologies in Kazakhstan’s horticulture sector. By combining efficient LED lighting with existing energy and CO₂ utilization strategies, Qaztomat aims to enhance productivity while maintaining stable year-round production under challenging climatic conditions.

With this investment, Qaztomat continues its strategy of combining innovative greenhouse technologies with sustainable resource use. The addition of Philips LED lighting will support the company’s goals of improving energy efficiency, maintaining year-round, reliable production, and meeting the growing demand for locally produced, fresh tomatoes across Kazakhstan and neighboring export markets.
