[News] Greater Safety in The Event of Breakdowns: ams OSRAM Supports Spain's Transition to Connected V16 Lights

News Source:

Since January 1, 2026, drivers in Spain have been required to carry certified V16 warning lights on expressways and highways, which are directly connected to the traffic authorities when in use. With the LEDguardian ROAD FLARE Signal V16 IoT, ams OSRAM offers a powerful solu-tion with a light range of up to 1,000 meters – for even greater visibility and protection, di-rectly from the car. In Germany, people who have broken down or been involved in an acci-dent can draw even more attention to themselves with approved warning lights such as the LEDguardian ROAD FLARE Signal TA20.

Anyone who has a breakdown or accident on a highway or motorway in Spain is required to use a certified V16 warning light such as the LEDguardian ROAD FLARE Signal V16 IoT from OSRAM Automotive. With this regulation, the Spanish traffic authority (DGT) aims to increase safety at accident sites and enable faster assistance. Via a mandatory communication module, the lights are directly connected to the Spanish traffic authority (DGT) and can automatically transmit their location if necessary. In Germany, V16 lights are not yet approved.

Connected safety with the LEDguardian ROAD FLARE Signal V16 IoT
The LEDguardian ROAD FLARE Signal V16 IoT from OSRAM alerts road users to a breakdown or accident safely and reliably. Thanks to its 360º light emission and a range of up to 1,000 meters, the light, which is approved in Spain, illuminates the danger zone generously. Since the light can be attached magnetically to the car roof, those affected do not have to leave the car and put themselves in danger, as is the case with conventional warning triangles. A simple, energy-saving IoT communication module automatically sends an emergency signal to the central DGT platform every 100 seconds after the lamp is switched on. From there, emergency services can be called more quickly and in a more targeted manner, and traffic warnings can be disseminated in real time.

Approved lighting solutions also available in Germany
A look at Germany shows that breakdowns and accidents also pose a significant safety risk here. According to a study by VUFO GmbH, there are more than 300 accidents with personal injury each year in this country as a result of a previous accident or breakdown at the roadside. Statistics show that such accidents are particularly frequent on expressways and at dusk or at night. The figures make it clear that this aspect of road safety also requires modern solutions.
Unlike Spain, Germany does not currently allow the use of V16 lights. Nevertheless, drivers in this country have options for increasing their safety with the latest lighting technology. For example, the LEDguardian ROAD FLARE Signal TA20 is approved, which, in combination with a warning triangle, can significantly increase visibility at the roadside and thus alert other road users to the danger zone.
