Osram Releases Infrared LEDs for Face Recognition in Smartwatches

Osram is expanding its photonics portfolio by adding two infrared LEDs for biometric identification in smartwatches. The new infrared LEDs of Osram, SFH 4170S and SFH 4180S, are designed to meet the requirement of smart wearable products with their compact size. The dimensions of the specially developed Oslon P1616 package (1.6 mm x 1.6 mm x 0.85 mm) make the SFH 4170S and SFH 4180S the smallest Osram components for biometric applications. Compared to similar products today, the two IREDs require about 50 percent less space. (Image: Osram) Despit...

【Photonics West 2019】Long Wavelength, Mobile 3D Sensing and LiDAR are the Major Market Momentum

Photonics West 2019 is the largest photonics exhibition in the world held annually in San Francisco. According to the exhibitors at the show, LEDinside learnt that the main technical challenges of VCSEL include power conversion efficiency (PCE), temperature drift, slope efficiency, and light field design. Most of the exhibitors at the show have achieved a power conversion efficiency of 40% for VCSEL products of 1-2W. Among them, Lumentum said it will continue to increase conversion efficiency to 43% in this year. LEDinside was honored to interview Somit Jos...

Ushio Develops High-output LEDs Emitting 160mW Visible Near-infrared Light

Japan-based Ushio Opto Semiconductors announced that it has developed a broadband LED that produces an output 160 mW over a wide bandwidth between 400 and 1000 nm, covering the range from visible light to near-infrared light. According to the Ushio Opto Semiconductors, the near-infrared light are widely applied in food scanning and medical field. In addition, the demands for portable measuring devices such as blood oximeter are rising. On the other hand, light that extends from the visible region to the near-infrared region where the wavelength is about 1000 nm matches th...

Osram’s Infrared LED Tells Farmers When to Harvest

Osram presented its new infrared LED, Oslon Black SFH 4736, which can be installed in smartphones or tablets for food growers to easily scan their crops and decide if it is the right time to harvest. (Image: Osram) The new Oslon Black SFH 4736 (NIRED), featured with more than double the radiant intensity of its predecessor, SFH 4735, can be used to detect reliable information about the sugar, water and fat content of food. The system makes use of the absorption behavior of certain molecular compounds. The NIRED irradiates a specimen with a defined spectr...
