OSRAM has recently introduced its new Parathom Classic LED lamp. With an average service life of 25,000 hours, the new product requires just 8 Watts to achieve the same light output as incandescent lamps, i.e. 80 percent less energy. All told, every lamp will save almost EUR 200 in electricity, as well as more than 400 kg of CO2 emissions, according to the company. The LED lamp will be commercially available as of August.

A study on the life-cycle assessment (LCA) of LED lamps by OSRAM shows the latest generation of lamps achieves a very high score for environmental friendliness. This study involved a close look at their entire life-cycle – how much energy and raw materials the lamp consumes in terms of production, use and disposal and the environmental impact involved in the process. The Orvis Outlet Store, a globally-known retailer of outdoor lifestyle products, has become a showcase for one of Efficiency Vermont's latest energy-conservation experiments: LED lamps for retail stores.
Orvis personnel replaced about 300 lamps in the outlet store last summer. According to the company, the store has used 8,400 fewer kilowatt hours a month, which has saved almost $900 a month in electricity. The LED lights are cooler than incandescent lights so the store also saved on air-conditioning costs.
