DOE Detroit's Street Lighting Conversion Report Show LEDs Cut Energy Consumption by 60%

The U.S. Department of Energy has released a new report on the comprehensive street lighting restoration currently being undertaken by the City of Detroit, which includes transitioning the existing high-pressure sodium (HPS) sources to LED. Entitled Restoring Detroit's Street Lighting System, the report provides an objective review of the circumstances surrounding the system restoration, the processes undertaken and decisions made, and the results to date.

DOE Joins PLA in Detroit LED Street Light Retrofit Initiative

The Public Lighting Authority of Detroit (PLA) announced its LED streetlight initiative in January this year. Detriot proposed a plan to retrofit over 50,000 street lights with LED bulbs over the next two years, saving the city a total of US $1.5 million annually, according to The Detriot News. Street lights will be provided by three firms – Cree, Leotek Electronics, and Walker-Miller Energy Services said Light Authority CEO Odis Jones.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport to Convert to LED Lights in Parking Structures

Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) will replace all 6,050 lighting fixtures in both parking structures and increase the number of fixtures by 19% while still saving 66% on its annual elect ric bill by switching to LED lights. The project, approved by the Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) board this month, will replace the 1,200 existing 210-watt metal halide fixtures in the Blue Deck with 2,400 repositioned 80-watt LED fixtures, set at a maximum of 60 watts.
