Medellin Colombia Christmas Lights Fiesta- Los Alumbrados

When a city lights up for the holidays some highlight certain districts and neighborhoods embellishing the areas of the city that are the most popular with visitors. However one city in South America goes all out creating extravagant and multicolored installations everywhere you look. If Christmas spirit was measured by the magnitude of lighting decorations Medellin Colombia would certainly be a top contender if not the gold medal winner with its famous Christmas Lights Fiesta- Los Alumbrados.

At Christmas time, Medellin becomes Colombia’s most extroverted city where millions of lights are used to create some fun and fabulous lighting structures. Christmas lighting of Medellín began 59 years ago in 1955.

It is estimated that more than 27 million bulbs are needed to decorate a variety of public areas across the city. Impressive designs and installations are setup along major roads, parks and urban squares.

However the most intricate installations are predominantly seen along the Medellín River. The luminous installations along the riverbank tell a variety of stories and the colorful reflections on the river create wonderful and captivating effects.

Millions of dollars are spent every year creating unique themes that are different from the previous season’s theme.

And to add even more luster to the city of Medellin, the citizens also participate wholeheartedly by decorating their yards, balconies and homes with festive decor and sparkling lights.

Felices Fiestas!
