Jakarta Government to Spend Rp 1.2 Trillion on LED Streetlight Upgrade

Indonesian capital Jakarta is spending Rp 1.2 trillion (US $86,736) on LED streetlight upgrades, reported Coconuts Jakarta.

The government plans to replace all existing traditional streetlights with LEDs, but the report criticized the retrofit projects were taking up a huge chunk of the city budget.

The streetlight replacement will take three years to complete, and will be able to help the municipality government save Rp 400 billion in energy costs. The city currently spends Rp 600 billion annually on streetlight energy consumption, said Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama.

By 2016, all streetlights in Jakarta will be replaced, Vivanews quoted Ahok saying Thursday.

In a separate press release, the Jakarta government announced it had retrofitted 9,000 streelights with LEDs in eight sub-districts in West Jakarta.

““So far, street light installation has touched 70 %,” said Saukani, Head of West Jakarta Industry and Energy Sub-Department recently. “While the rest of them is still under goods process from distributor.”.

The lights have a 4-year warranty, and the supplier is expected to replace the lights if they fail during the warranty period.
