Hot Picks of the Week April 6-10

Highlights of the week:

  • LEDinside team finally gets a chance to meet the Father of Blue LED, Shuji Nakamura, at a special Epistar event. Nobel Laureate Nakamura and Steven DenBaars, a fellow colleague at College of Engineering at UCSB, point out the future of LED lighting technology will be GaN-on-GaN, and that laser emerge as the upcoming next generation lighting to replace LEDs.
  • Lumileds management and business will remain largely unaffected after Go Scale Capital acquires the company, according to a company representative. The company appears conservative about licensing patents to Chinese LED manufacturers, but further observation is probably required in this area.
  • Osram Opto is coordinating and collaborating with five other LED companies in a German government funded LED manufacturing R&D project.
  • OLED technology has gained some attention this week with renowned U.S. Lighting Research Center (LRC) setting up a new OLED lighting education program for the OLED industry. Another change witnessed is Aixtron’s acquisition of OLED encapsulation company PlasmaSi.
  • Changes in Philips LED luminaires and retrofit bulb licensing program is to benefit existing licensees. For more please see below.
