Adelaide in Australia to Roll out First Smart Streetlight Pilot Project

Intelligent LED streetlights capable of automatically dimming according to the ambient lighting environment are being trialed in Adelaide, Australia, reported Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

About 64 lights will be installed in the city, and will be the first of its kind installed by an Australian municipality.

The trial which rolls out on May 16 will last for five weeks.

The city is exploring how to use the smart lighting technology to optimize lighting required to create a safe environment, said Peter Auhl, Adelaide City Council's associate director of IT.

The lights are dimmed to lower brightness levels, but still sufficient enough for the general area to be safely seen.

Motion sensors built in the lights turn on the lights when a pedestrian or vehicle approaches, but gradually dims to a safe lighting level as moving objects go away.

The smart LED lights are capable of sending info back to control centers by reporting breakages.
