Plessey’s GaN-on-Silicon Micro LED Display Technology Pushes Advanced AR Devices and Display Solutions

Plessey, the UK-based optoelectronic technology solutions developer, said that it has transferred its business focus from high-powered solid-state lighting, horticultural lighting and healthcare/ safety sensors sector to GaN-on-Si monolithic Micro LED display technology. The company is disrupting the global display market with a new generation of Augmented Reality (AR) devices and display solutions based on the Micro LED technology.

Featured with high brightness, high contrast, lower power consumption, fast refresh time and the capabilities of integration with sensors as well as various backplanes options, Micro LED are believed to be the next generation display technology enabling a wider range of innovative applications.

Big names including Samsung, Sony, Apple and others have been working on creating products using Micro LED technology. Sony has recently announced the home installation services of its Micro LED-based Crystal LED display. Players of the supply chain see commercialization of the technology coming in one to two years.

Plessey, who dived into the development of MOCVD based GaN-on-Si monolithic Micro LED, has had a highly successful year with the development of Micro LED-based AR devices.

Chris Bailey, Plessey’s Financial Director & Controller, said, “Plessey is continually striving to innovate and deliver manufacturing excellence, and this past year saw a record result in sales following three years of continual growth. The recent technology breakthroughs such as the development of the native green light and achieving the world’s first GaN-on-Silicon monolithic full HD Micro LED bonded displays, would not be possible without the continual investments and highly-skilled workforce based at our Plymouth facility.”
